Natural Treatment for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition in which you experience pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. You also have certain points on the body that are very tender when touched. The cause has not yet been determined, and there is no cure. The intensity of symptoms varies among sufferers, and the symptoms can come and go. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several natural treatment methods exist that can be combined into an effective natural treatment strategy.

Omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammation, which can lead to pain.
Flax Seed Oil Capsules:  or 16 oz of Flax Seed Oil: 

Fish Oil: is an excellent source; take one to two capsules or one to two tbsp. of oil daily. Discuss this supplement with your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning medications.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine:  Provides muscle support; take 500 to 2,000 mg daily, it is excellent for the heart.

Calcium & Magnesium:  And malic acid both address multiple symptoms of the condition; take 3 to 4 tablets at night before bed..

S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe): Can help boost your mood; take 800 mg daily. A combination calcium and vitamin D supplement addresses muscle and skeletal weakness; take as directed on the product label. What is SAMe?

SAMe is found in all living cells. It is a naturally occurring molecule produced by a reaction of the amino acid methionine with adenosine triphosphate. SAMe acts as a substrate in many biological reactions and is the precursor of certain essential amino acids. SAMe is not a botanical, but a supplement or biochemical compound commercially produced in yeast cell cultures.

What is it used for?

Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses SAMe was discovered in Italy in 1952. Since that time, numerous clinical studies have been performed to determine its efficacy. SAMe has been used in Europe, where it has been available by prescription since 1975, to treat arthritis and depression. It has been available in the United States as a supplement under the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act since 1999. General uses SAMe has been studied for the treatment of depressive disorders, osteoarthritis, and liver disorders.

What is the recommended dosage?

Depression: 200 mg to 1,600 mg/day. Liver disease: 800 to 1,000 mg/day. Osteoarthritis: 1,200 mg/day initially, then maintenance 400 mg/day.

How safe is it?

Contraindications SAMe should not be used in patients with bipolar depression because of reports of increased anxiety and mania. Pregnancy/nursing Trials conducted in pregnant women documented no harmful effects. Interactions None well documented. Side Effects Available data indicate nausea, diarrhea, constipation, mild insomnia, dizziness, and sweating to be the most commonly reported adverse reactions of SAMe. Data from long-term use of SAMe are lacking. Toxicities Toxicological studies concluded that SAMe is safe even at the highest doses. References

It may seem counter intuitive to suggest exercise when you are in pain, but according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research indicates low-intensity exercise on a regular basis is one of the best natural remedy treatments for fibromyalgia. It might be difficult at first, but as you continue, your muscles will become less tense and stiff, you will sleep better, and you will raise the levels of beneficial chemicals in the body that combat pain. Water exercises are a great choice. You should not attempt to design an exercise regimen on your own; consult with a doctor or physical therapist for guidance.

Stress Reduction

Stress exacerbates symptoms of fibromyalgia. It is important for you to find ways to manage your stress. Many natural techniques can achieve this end. Experiment with yoga, meditation, deep breathing, progressive relaxation, positive visualization and anything else that makes you feel more relaxed. Sleep: 30 to 60 drops as need under the tongue.

Treatment Modalities You can also experiment with different treatment modalities to ease symptoms of fibromyalgia. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the following treatments have shown benefit for treating fibromyalgia. Acupuncture (only from a Christian) can address energy deficiencies in various parts of the body and restore the proper flow. If your fibromyalgia is causing neck and back pain, a chiropractor might offer relief from these symptoms. Seek out a massage therapist experienced in treating fibromyalgia; she can help reduce stress, improve circulation and ease sore muscles. It is important to note that for these treatments to be effective, you often need several sessions. The practitioner will help you determine a course of treatment for best results. Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected. Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be benign. More dangerous, or malignant, tumors form when two things occur:

  1. a cancerous cell manages to move throughout the body using the blood or lymph systems, destroying healthy tissue in a process called invasion
  2. that cell manages to divide and grow, making new blood vessels to feed itself in a process called angiogenesis.

Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form. Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control.
