At the end of the 12 weeks, the treated group recorded a modest reduction in total cholesterol of 4.2%.5

Digestive Health

The high concentration of cynarin in artichokes not only affects cholesterol, but also can contribute to aiding in digestive health. Cynarin is known to stimulate the production of bile, which enables us to digest fats and absorb vitamins from our food, making artichokes an excellent way to start any meal.

Studies have shown that artichoke leaf extract can be very helpful for people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and dyspepsia, or upset stomachs. In a study done at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, 208 adults who suffered from IBS and dyspepsia were monitored over a two-month period of intervention with artichoke leaf extract. Results showed a 26.4% reduction in IBS incidence among the participants at the end of the trial. A significant shift of self-reported bowel patterns away from “alternating constipation/diarrhea” toward “normal” was observed as well. Dyspepsia symptoms also decreased by 41% after treatment, and in general, the participants noted a 20% increase in quality of life after treatment.

There are many other powerful polyphenol-type antioxidants found in artichokes that researchers believe can contribute to the prevention and management of prostate cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia. In research done at Comenius University in Slovakia, artichoke leaf extract was studied for its ability to inhibit growth of leukemia cells. Although scientific studies have found “mixed results,” taking 3 to 6 g of guggul per day might help to lower high cholesterol levels, thus reducing plaque buildup in the arteries, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. The University of Maryland notes, however, that guggul has been most effective at lowering cholesterol in populations of people who eat traditionally low-fat diets and not so much in Western-style diets that are high in fat. Evidence from double-blind clinical trials suggest that taking guggul can “significantly improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels in people,” says the University of Michigan Health System.

Hawthorn Berry

Hawthorn has been used in traditional medicine to treat cardiovascular disease. Taking 160 to 1,800 mg per day, divided into two or three doses, can help prevent plaque formation in arteries, lower high cholesterol and lower high blood pressure, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. The polyphenols called rutin and quercetin contained in hawthorn have antioxidant properties that can improve cardiovascular health and stop plaque buildup, according to animal and test tube studies cited by the University of Maryland. Hawthorn also helps regulate the heartbeat, dilate blood vessels and decrease peripheral vascular resistance, says the Herb Growing & Marketing Network. Hawthorn is found in most herbal remedies for treating hardening of the arteries, angina and heart weakness, the Network notes.

Horny Goat Weed

Horny goat weed historically has been used to treat hardening of the arteries or the disease’s associated symptoms. This herb might improve symptoms and electrocardiogram findings in people with hardening of the arteries, according to studies cited by the University of Michigan Health System.


The active compound in turmeric—curcumin—can prevent blood platelet coagulation and help rid arteries of plaque formation, according to animal and preliminary human studies cited by the University of Michigan Health System. In traditional Chinese medicine, turmeric has been used to invigorate the blood, says the Herb Growing & Marketing Network. Turmeric’s strong antioxidant actions can protect LDL cholesterol from being oxidized, thus lowering blood cholesterol and preventing plaque buildup.


Taking 10 g, or 1 heaping tsp., or more of ginger root per day can reduce platelet stickiness and help clear arteries of plaque, says the University of Michigan Health System. Sage: This herb helps your body absorb oils better, and drinking sage tea could help people who are chronically dry, Peeka says.


Rosemary-If you have noticed yourself sneezing or your joints beginning to stiffen, you may want to consider adding rosemary to your meals. It contains rosmarinic acid, an antioxidant that works with your immune system to block allergy triggers; it also helps to prevent arthritis. Rosemary can also help to eliminate bloating. This power herb can also help your memory. Rosemary arouses neurons that communicate with the hippocampus, allowing you to recall information more easily. In ancient Greece, medical students would wear rosemary garlands around their necks during exams. Take 6-12 drops 2-3 times per day.


Saffron-The yellow color saffron produces comes from crocin, a powerful antioxidant, which studies have identified as a cancer fighter. Take 6-12 drops 2-3 times per day.

What is silver water or colloidal silver?

Astragalus, unlike most Chinese medicinal plants, actually tastes surprisingly good as a tea, with a velvety texture and a sweet, buttery taste. For a broth that’s almost like chicken soup, cook the roots into a soup stock, or make an herbal tea and use that to cook rice or another grain. Use 6-30 drops per day, during the cold season or to replenish a burned out immune system.

Ginkgo is an herb that offers promise for treating a large collection of brain, nerve, and circulatory conditions. It is the most widely-prescribed phytopharmaceutical in the world, with well over 200 published studies to its credit.

Ginkgo acts by increasing blood flow to the brain and central nervous system as well as promoting peripheral circulation, and it exerts a protective effect on cells in general and nerve cells in particular.13 Ginkgo’s unusual biochemical properties lend it to treating memory loss and cognition disorders.

By all accounts, one of the most dramatic properties of ginkgo is on memory, where it improves concentration, short- and long-term memory, absentmindedness, confusion and fatigue. One interesting French study measured the effect on mental function and found improved vigilance, learning, and memory in volunteers with an average age of 29. The effects were measurable within 30 minutes of taking the herb, peaking at two to three hours, with benefits continuing over several days. Most results are not that immediate, however. Most studies note improvement after one month, with benefits still increasing at six months.

Use the most concentrated form, tincture, 6-30 drops per day.

Here’s an herb with a long history of brain building. Gotu kola is a mainstay of herbal medicine in Ayurveda, and sneaked into European treatment many years ago. It was used in France in the 1880s. A standout herb for the nervous system, gotu kola has a host of benefits for neurological recovery and cognition.

The plant is a jungle creeper that grows in hot moist climates in the South and Southeast Asian tropics, from India to the Philippines, and is commonly eaten raw as a green vegetable, with many different kinds of foods, much like a salad. The herb is exceptionally high in B-complex vitamins, especially in B-1, B-2 and B-6, all of which are essential nutrients for the nervous system.

Gotu kola is also called brahmi, which means “godlike,” a nod to its anti-aging properties and to its use as an aid to cognition. It has a bitter taste and is cooling to the body. Used to promote circulation, especially to the blood vessels of the skin and mucous membranes, it is a rejuvenator for the nerves and brain. As the main South Asian herb for the nervous system, it is used both in the repair of nerve tissues from crushing trauma, such as spinal injury, neuromuscular disorders, and to increase general brain function, memory, concentration, and mental acuity.

Gotu kola strengthens memory, concentration, and intelligence, and promotes longevity. This remedy is used to treat disorders as diverse as epilepsy, senility, hair loss, and psoriasis. Gotu kola is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The active substances in gotu kola are thought to be triterpenes (steroid-like compounds), which have a balancing effect on connective tissues. These triterpenes improve the function and integrity of the collagen matrix and support the ground substance, the basic glue that holds the cells of our bodies together.

A study in rats showed an impressive improvement in memory. The treated rats were able to retain learned behavior 3 to 60 times better than the control rats. A Korean study shows that the constituents in gotu kola show potential for treating Alzheimer’s disease. Follow-up animal research from India used gotu kola tea to improve cognitive behavior in two different types of experiments in a laboratory model.

Many people use a modest dose of 6-24 drops per day in tinctures for daily rejuvenation.

Calamus is a major herb for the mind in Asian medicine. It is said to stimulate the power of self-expression and to enhance intelligence. Ancient yogis and seers used this herb. The root promotes circulation to the brain, heightens memory, enhances awareness, and increases communication and self-expression.

It is a bitter herb that acts as an anti-gas digestive aid and mucolytic, so it sees use in autism. Calamus also has warming respiratory functions. This herb is often combined with gotu kola, which is cooling and mild. The complementary energetics makes the combination suitable for a wide variety of people. In attention deficit conditions, it combines well with gotu kola, valerian, and licorice. Over the long term, calamus will warm the body and pacify the mind.

Calamus is quite emetic in doses not much larger than the suggested dose, and it may not be compatible for co-administration with other psychoactive drugs, although little is known about these concerns. In the British herbal tradition, calamus root is thought to be a stomach acid balancer. A dose of up to 10 drops of tincture per day will reduce acid, while higher doses stimulate acid production.

Calamus is a potent herb, so the effective dose is quite reasonable, which increases compliance. Use 6-30 drops per day. Work up gradually to the effective dose.

Lobelia herb is a classic American remedy for preventing and treating seizures and has a very long record of exceptional success. American herbalists report that, often, this herb alone, with daily preventive doses, will be curative over a few months. There is essentially no science behind this herb, so we are relying on case reports from a century ago and recent clinical observations of practitioners.

Consider using the therapeutic dose in tea, tincture, or capsules for prevention. Use the tincture sublingually and massage this liquid into the base of the skull during a seizure to bring rapid relief. The pure acidified seed tincture may be stronger than the acidified fresh herb tincture, which, in turn, is stronger than the dry herb. Lobelia can be nauseating. It is important to increase the dose carefully to the therapeutic levels, which can vary a lot depending on the needs of the case, so this must be determined on a case-by-case basis. Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which the heart’s upper chambers quiver instead of beating regularly. This arrhythmia increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, cognitive impairment and death. Many people do not experience heart palpitations, shortness of breath or other symptoms that would bring the condition to the attention of a health care provider. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained arrhythmia in adults. It is a significant public health problem in the United States where it affects more than 12 million Americans and almost 10% of the population older than 80 years. The prevalence increases with advancing age and with worsening cardiac function. Atrial fibrillation is an independent risk factor for death and greatly increases the risk for embolic stroke. In addition, this arrhythmia can be associated with hemodynamic instability, tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy, and systemic embolism.
Despite advances in its medical management over the past two decades, the prognosis of newly diagnosed patients – both in terms of heart failure development and survival if heart failure develops – has not improved. Treatment aims to keep a patient’s heart rate at rest to fewer than 110 beats per minute in those with stable function of the ventricles, the heart’s lower chambers.

A cardiac arrhythmia, also called heart or cardiac dysrhythmia, is a disturbance in the regular rhythm of the heartbeat. Certain types of cardiac arrhythmia are life-threatening and a medical emergency while other types are not of any major concern. Some forms are commonly called heart palpitations by the general population. Those who have a cardiac arrhythmia should review the herbs listed a few paragraphs below and eliminate those that may be causing increased heart rate.

Heart arrhythmia simply means that the heart rhythm is irregular — such as missing a heart beat or perhaps each beat does not follow the proper rhythm — or it can also mean the rhythm is too fast or too slow.

Natural or alternative cardiac arrhythmia treatment
Very little research has been done with natural herbs or nutrients in the prevention or therapy of cardiac arrhythmia. I have evaluated some of the published research over the past few years and present the nutrients and herbs that perhaps could be helpful in prevention or treatment. I do not claim that these supplements are a natural cure since more research is needed.

Fish oils: may reduce ventricular arrhythmia and atrial arrhythmia (most commonly presented as atrial fibrillation). Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids have been studied for heart arrhythmia more than any other natural supplements. Fish oils stabilize cardiac cell membranes. Doctors who are planning to prescribe anti arrhythmia medicines to their patients for mild cases of arrhythmia should first consider recommending their patients eat cold water fish almost every day and perhaps add one to four fish oil capsules to their daily supplement regimen. Consumption of tuna or other broiled or baked fish, but not fried fish or fish sandwiches, is associated with lower incidence of atrial fibrillation. Fish intake may reduce the risk of this common cardiac arrhythmia.

The study examined the kinetics of incorporation of n-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)  into human myocardial membrane phospholipids during supplementation with fish oil and alpha-linolenic acid-rich flax seed oil:

Flax Seed Oil:  also available as 16 oz of Oil:  Patients with low self-reported fish intake (<1 fish meal/wk and no oil supplements) accepted for elective cardiac surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass were randomly allocated to 1 of 6 groups: no supplement; fish oil (6 g EPA+DHA/d) for either 7, 14, or 21 d before surgery; flaxseed oil; or olive oil. In the fish-oil-treated subjects, accumulation of EPA and DHA in the right atrium was curvilinear with time and reached a maximum at approximately 30 d of treatment and displaced mainly arachidonic acid. Flaxseed oil supplementation yielded a small increase in atrial EPA but not DHA, whereas olive oil did not significantly change atrial n-3 fatty acids. The results of the present study show that dietary n-3 fatty acids are rapidly incorporated into human myocardial phospholipids at the expense of arachidonic acid during high-dose fish-oil supplementation.

Effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the prevention of atrial arrhythmias

The effects of omega-3 fatty acids on membrane stabilization are well known. Reduction of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death has been reported; fewer data exist regarding the effects on atrial arrhythmias. The object of this report is to evaluate the reduction of atrial arrhythmia -fibrillation after treatment with omega-3, in patients with dual-chamber pacemakers. We have examined 40 patients with paroxysmal atrial tachyarrhythmia recorded at the periodic pacemaker controls. At the study entry, all patients were treated with omega-3 (1 g/die). Our data suggest a powerful effect of omega-3 fatty acids in the reduction of atrial arrhythmia – fibrillation in these patients, without significant adverse effects.

Dietary flaxseed protects against ventricular fibrillation induced by ischemia-reperfusion in normal and hypercholesterolemic Rabbits.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the (n-3) PUFA found in fish oils, exert antiarrhythmic effects during ischemia. Flaxseed is the richest plant source of another (n-3) PUFA, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), yet its effects remain largely unknown. Our objective was to determine whether a flaxseed-rich diet is antiarrhythmic in normal and hypercholesterolemic rabbits. This study demonstrates that dietary flaxseed exerts antiarrhythmic effects during ischemia-reperfusion in rabbit hearts, possibly through shortening of the action potential.

Heart arrhythmias can be caused by a number of factors. It is possible that in a minority of cases CoQ10 could be helpful, but a full evaluation is needed to determine the cause before trying any natural supplements or prescription medications.

Berberine is present in the roots, rhizomes and stem bark of various plants including goldenseal ,Oregon grape ,barberry,   and turmeric .  Berberine has also been used historically as a dye, due to its yellow color are potential natural agents that deserve further evaluation.

One hundred fifty-six patients with CHF and >90 ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) and/or nonsustained ventricular tachycardia were randomly divided into 2 groups. All patients were given conventional therapy for congestive heart failure, consisting of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, digoxin, diuretics, and nitrates. Patients in the treatment group (n = 79) were also given berberine 1.2 to 2.0 g/day. The remaining 77 patients were given placebo. Berberine improved quality of life and decreased VPCs and mortality in patients with congestive heart failure.

Daidzein is effective in preventing ventricular fibrillation induced by chloroform in mice and arrhythmia induced by aconitine in rats. Daidzein has obvious protective effect on drug-induced arrhythmia, which may be related to its inhibition of Na+ or Ca2+ influx and its blocking beta-adrenergic receptor.

Herbs that could cause cardiac arrhythmia
Certain herbs stimulate cardiac rhythm. Herbs in high doses that may cause heart palpitations include excessive intake of licorice, ephedra, gingko bilboa, ginseng, guarana, horny goat weed, rhodiola herb, yohimbie, and other tonic herbs. Usually high doses of these herbs cause the cardiac arrhythmia.

In this report, a case of frequent ventricular arrhythmias probably due to Ginkgo biloba is presented. The patient complained of palpitations twice in a month and on both occasions symptoms and electrocardiographic evidence of ventricular arrhythmias resolved with discontinuation of Ginkgo biloba.

Nutrients that can cause heart rhythm disturbances
Nutrients that can cause an arrhythmia include tyrosine amino acid, phenylalanine, and high doses of SAM-e.

Hormones that could cause cardiac problems
Hormones than can cause arrhythmia include high doses of DHEA and pregnenolone, and probably high doses of progesterone or other hormones, including thyroid hormones.

A simple way to bring a rhythm back to normal
In some cases, when an arrhythmia comes on without chest pain, particularly if it is a fast, regular rhythm, lying down on the floor and elevating the legs and feet, hips close to the wall, resting the feet on the wall can rush blood down to the heart and make the heart rhythm come back to normal. Please discuss with your doctor. Also consider drinking one to three glasses of water for fluid replacement. An arrhythmia is commonly called heart palpitations by the general public.

Potential Causes 
History of heart disease — coronary artery disease, stents, heart valve disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and pericarditis.
Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid gland can cause arrhythmia, particularly atrial fibrillation
Prescription medications
Over the counter medicines including cold medicines that have pseudoephedrine or related compounds.
Caffeine found in coffee, tea, cocoa
Alcohol, when used in excess, increases the risk for atrial fibrillation
Stress, whether emotional or physical
Lack of good sleep is a common cause
Marijuana overuse
H. Pylori infection of the stomach – may increase risk of atrial fibrillation.
Air pollution may interfere with the heart’s ability to reset its electrical properties in an orderly manner.

Tachycardia and bradycardia
An arrhythmia can also occur when the heart beats either too fast or too slow. When your heart beats too fast — more than 100 beats per minute — the condition is known as tachycardia arrhythmia. When it beats too slow — fewer than 60 beats per minute — you have bradycardia arrhythmia. These two arrhythmias are not serious unless they occur in a extreme fashion for prolonged periods.

Types of ventricular arrhythmias
Premature Ventricular Contraction — an occasional skipped heart beat, occurs in everyone at some time in their life. This is not serious.

Ventricular Tachycardia — A rhythm of the heart at a rate of more than 100 beats per minute is considered a tachycardia. If the ventricles of the heart experience tachycardia for a sustained period of time, there can be deleterious effects. Individuals may sense a tachycardia as a pounding sensation of the heart; this is known as “palpitations”. However, strictly speaking, palpitations are any sensation of an individual’s own heart beat, and can occur at rates less than 100 beats/minute.

Ventricular fibrillation — If fibrillation occurs in the ventricles (lower chambers) of the heart, it is always a medical emergency. If left untreated, ventricular fibrillation can lead to death within minutes. When a heart goes into ventricular fibrillation, effective pumping of the blood stops. The individual goes into cardiac arrest, and will not survive unless cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation are provided immediately.

Atrial fibrillation - atrial and supraventricular
Fibrillation occurs when the heart muscle begins a quivering motion instead of a normal, healthy pumping rhythm.
Atrial fibrillation is the quivering, chaotic motion in the upper chambers of the heart, known as the atria. It is often due to serious underlying medical conditions, and should be evaluated by a physician. It is not typically a medical emergency. Some people can live many years or decades with atrial fibrillation.

Supraventricular Arrhythmia simply means that the arrhythmia is being instigated above the ventricles, which most often means that it is coming from the atria.

The gastric microbe, Helicobacter pylori, that’s the cause of most stomach ulcers also takes it out on the heart. People with rapid beating of the upper chamber of the heart, atrial fibrillation, are nearly 20 times more likely to be infected with Helicobacter than are healthy “controls,” according to a report in the medical journal Heart. While the exact mechanism is unknown, the theory is that it may relate to autoantibodies that develop in some H. pylori-infected patients. These antibodies, which normally attack an acid pump found on gastric cells, may instead attack a similar pump on cardiac cells, ultimately triggering atrial fibrillation. The new findings are based on a study of H. pylori tests in 59 patients with atrial fibrillation and 45 healthy controls. In the overall analysis, 97.2 percent of atrial fibrillation patients were positive for H. pylori compared with just 5.3 percent of controls.

Ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring usually is indicated if the etiology of arrhythmias cannot be determined from the patient’s history, physical examination, and resting ECG. When an arrhythmia occurs unpredictably or does not occur daily, an initial two-week course of continuous closed-loop event recording is indicated. Holter monitoring for 24 to 48 hours may be appropriate in patients with daily arrhythmia. Trans-telephonic event monitors are more effective and cost-effective than Holter monitors for most patients.

Sinus Arrhythmia
Sinus arrhythmia means the arrhythmia is being generated from the sinus node.

Symptom and signs
Most people have felt their heart beat very fast, experienced a fluttering in their chest, or noticed that their heart skipped a beat. Almost everyone has also felt dizzy, faint, or out of breath or had chest pains at one time or another. Symptoms of heart arrhythmia may include:

* palpitations (increased awareness of the heart beating faster) This is often the only symptom for most people.
* chest pain
* shortness of breath
* lightheadedness or fainting
* fatigue or weakness

You should not panic if you experience a few flutters or your heart races infrequently, this happens in many people. But if the heart arrhythmia occurs regularly, a doctor’s visit is recommended.

Medications Used to Treat Heart Arrhythmias
If the cardiac arryhthmia is caused by a disease, treatment of the underlying disorder is necessary to prevent worsening. Antiarrhythmic drugs may be used to treat rhythm disorders but all of these drugs may cause side effects. Although some patients benefit from them, heart arrhythmias may worsen in 10 or more percent of patients. For that reason and the fact that the more serious heart rhythm abnormalities occur in sick patients, antiarrhythmic drugs are often first given in the hospital, so the effects on heart rhythm can be carefully monitored.

I prefer to use natural supplements and methods first for mild cases of heart arrhythmia, however, moderate to severe cases may require heart arrhythmia medication, such as:

Class 1 Anti-arrhythmic Blocks cardiac sodium channels; slows rate of impulse conduction throughout heart; some drugs also affect potassium channels, altering how long it takes the heart to “reset” after each impulse quinidine (Quinidex, others) phenytoin (Dilantin) flecainide (Tambocor)

Class 2 Anti-arrhythmic Blocks beta receptors, which are chemical docking sites for signals from nervous system; reduces impulse formation in SA node; slows conduction in AV node; reduces force of contractions propranalol (Inderal) acebutolol (Sectral)

Class 3 Anti-arrhythmic Blocks potassium, sodium and calcium channels, and beta receptors (amiodarone); or blocks potassium channels and beta receptors (sotalol); many actions, but mostly prolongs each impulse and prolongs time between impulses amiodarone (Cordarone) sotalol (Betapace)

Class 4 Anti-arrhythmic Blocks calcium channels; reduces formation of impulses in SA node; slows conduction through AV node; reduces force of contractions verapamil (Calan, others) diltiazem (Cardizem, others)

Diagnosis and management of cardiac arrhythmias can be accomplished by using electrocardiographic monitoring devices while you are at home or work on in your daily life. The reason heart arrhythmia monitoring is recommended by cardiologists include: palpitations, fainting, anti arrhythmia drug monitoring and evaluation. The Holter monitor is the prototype continuous electrocardiographic monitor, providing continuous recording of the electrocardiographic signal for 24 or 48 hours. Transtelephonic electrocardiographic monitors transmit recordings by telephone and convert the signal into a conventional recording. Devices that are applied during the occurrence of symptoms record and save electrocardiographic data prospectively for an average of two minutes. These devices have an extended monitoring ability. The prototype is a credit card-sized monitor applied to the chest wall at the time of the symptom.

Supplements that may benefit atrial fibrillation
Natural methods or natural supplements are rarely used by the medical community in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, but there is early research to indicate that they may be helpful.

Fish oils:  reduce arrhythmias. I wonder if more doctors recommended fish oils, or if patients ate more cold water fish, there would be fewer instances of atrial fibrillation or other types of cardiac arrhythmias and fewer prescriptions would be needed for antiarrhythmic drugs. Also consider eating fish roe which have a lot of omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Orhan Onalan and colleagues from the University of Toronto reviewed randomized clinical trials on the role of magnesium in the treatment. They compared the effectiveness of magnesium to placebo or antiarrhythmic drugs. Magnesium therapy was much more effective than placebo, and did not have side effects. Dr. Orhan Onalan and colleagues conclude, “intravenous magnesium administration is an effective and safe strategy for the acute management of rapid atrial fibrillation.” Am J Cardiol 2007.
Magnesium,  at least intravenously, can be helpful in rapid onset atrial fibrillation. Magnesium deficiency in the diet induces heart arrhythmias. Oral use is likely to be of benefit.
Vitamin C:   Good C Esterified C 180 veg/capsule, 500mg ;1,000-5,000 mg ESTERFIED-ACID FREE WITH BIOFLAVONOIDS 4 or more capsules daily, as a dietary supplement. May be helpful in some cases.Oral vitamin C cuts the risk of early recurrence after patients undergo electrical cardioversion. Vitamin C reduces the low-level inflammation that accompanies this condition. Early atrial fibrillation recurrence after cardioversion may be due to electrophysiological changes in the chambers of the heart. A research team randomized 44 patients who had undergone cardioversion for persistent atrial fibrillation to standard therapy plus oral vitamin C or standard treatment only. Patients given the vitamin received a 2-gram loading dose 12 hours before cardioversion and 500 mg twice daily for the next 7 days. One (4 percent) of the patients given vitamin C had a relapse of atrial fibrillation, while eight (36 percent) of patients not given the vitamin did. International Journal of Cardiology, July 2005.
Keep your weight at a normal range since obesity is associated with a higher rate of heart rhythm disturbances.
Avoid excess alcohol consumption.
Consider reducing or eliminating all stimulants including caffeine, some herbal teas, coffee, and herbal supplements. Try to get a deep sleep each night and try to reduce daily stress.

In a small preliminary study, three sessions of yoga a week reduced the number of episodes, improved quality of life, lowering levels of the anxiety and depression which often plagues patients with this condition.

Supplements that may make A Fib worse
Many dietary supplements can stimulate heart tissue and would not be advised to those with this condition. Some of them include tyrosine, phenylalanine, SAM-e, alpha lipoic acid, ginseng, tongkat ali, yohimbe. There are many others that act as stimulants and I will enlarge this list over time. High doses of vitamin D could be a cause.

Atrial fibrillation and stroke
During an episode of AF, abnormal electrical activity in the heart causes its upper two chambers to beat in a rapid, uncoordinated rhythm; the arrhythmia itself is not life-threatening, but over time AF can contribute to stroke or heart failure in some people. Multiple trials have established that antithrombotic therapy decreases stroke risk. Aspirin is associated with a relative risk reduction of about 20% and adjusted-dose warfarin (international normalized ratio 2.0-3.0) is associated with a relative risk reduction of about 60%. Warfarin is more effective than aspirin but is used less often than indicated because of hemorrhagic risk and the inconvenience of coagulation monitoring.

Scientists do not know all the causes of atrial fibrillation, but its risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, heavy alcohol consumption, and valvular heart disease. Recent data have also indicated that obesity is a risk. Obesity and a common sleep problem called obstructive sleep apnea may raise the risk.

Atrial fibrillation due to prescription medicines
Certain osteoporosis drugs, including Fosamax made by Merck Inc and Reclast by Novartis AG, are linked to atrial fibrillation. Bisphosphonates increase the rates of serious atrial fibrillation. Women who have ever used alendronate, also known by the trade name Fosamax, have an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. Whether the benefits of Foxamax use in terms of fracture prevention in patients with osteoporosis are outweighed by the risks of atrial fibrillation remain to be determined.

The regular use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and newer anti-inflammatory medications known as cox-2 inhibitors.

Steroid use could also cause atrial fibrillation. Treatment with high doses of corticosteroids, regardless of the indication, increases the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation. In the May 2006 Archives of Internal Medicine, Dr. Stricker reports that in the Rotterdam Study the risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation was significantly higher in individuals who received corticosteroids. High doses of corticosteroids may affect the balance of potassium in cardiac muscle cells, which may induce arrhythmia or may cause sodium and fluid retention, leading to hypertension, left atrial enlargement and congestive heart failure — all known risk factors.

Atrial fibrillation and alcohol
Those who consume a large amount of alcohol are more likely to experience atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm problem, than their peers who consume little alcohol. A Fib due to excess alcohol use can occur in men and women.

The number of people with atrial fibrillation is higher than previously estimated and increasing. In a study of Minnesota residents, the incidence of atrial fibrillation rose more than 12 percent between 1980 and 2000. At that rate, the number of U.S. residents with the rhythm will rise to 16 million by 2050 — nearly three times previous estimates.

Atrial fibrillation treatment
The treatment of atrial fibrillation is directed toward the prevention of thromboembolism, control of the ventricular rate and conversion to sinus rhythm. Most people who have atrial fibrillation need more than one type of treatment. Treatment options may include nonsurgical procedures, medications, medical devices such as pacemakers, or surgical procedures. Medications (anti-arrhythmics) are prescribed to restore normal sinus rhythm. The medications effectively maintain sinus rhythm for at least one year in about half of the patients treated. However, atrial fibrillation medications can cause side effects such as nausea and fatigue. Digitalis has serious side effects.

Digitalis side effects – digitalis does not improve mortality
People with atrial fibrillation who are treated with digitalis are at increased risk of death. Dr. Knut Gjesdal of the University of Oslo, Norway have found that digitalis increases exercise capacity and reduces morbidity in patients with heart failure. However, those that take digitalis have no survival benefit. Heart 2008;94:191-196.

New options for atrial fibrillation
New nonpharmacologic possibilities have emerged. These include surgery, radiofrequency catheter ablation, pacing, and atrial defibrillation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Atrial Fibrillation and cognitive function
Men with atrial fibrillation score significantly lower on cognitive performance tests than their peers without this dangerous heart arrhythmia. A variety of factors link atrial fibrillation to decreased cognitive performance, including undiagnosed stroke, lesions on the brain, and reduced cardiac output. Perhaps medications used to treat atrial fibrillation may also be a factor.

A fib

A fib is caused when the electrical impulses in your heart do not start at the sinus node. Instead these impulses can start at many different places in the atria, or upper part of your heart. When the heart is in a fib, the atria is in a chaotic state and cannot provide enough blood to the lower part of your heart and to the rest of your body. Your doctor can diagnose a fib by a simple EKG or by wearing a Holter monitor.

Many people who are in a fib are found to have low potassium levels. Potassium can slow the heart down by increasing the time the heart rests between beats; this keeps the heart in a normal rhythm. However, when potassium becomes too low the heart becomes excitable and starts to increase electrical impulses causing a fib. To avoid potassium deficiency, you should consume between 1,600 to 2,400 mg/day in your diet or consider taking a oral potassium supplement.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is an antioxidant found in every cell in the body. Its main role is to produce energy in the cells’ mitochondria which fuels the heart function. Fish Oil

Some studies have shown the benefit of using fish oil to treat certain heart conditions. Research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) described four clinical trials that suggest fish oil may help prevent heart attack and heart failure.
But the same study notes that these clinical trials failed to prove the benefit of fish oil in treating AF. Another more recent study published in JACC also concluded that fish oil did not reduce AF symptoms.


Researchers reported on the benefits of taurine for AF patients in the journal Medical Hypotheses. Taurine is an amino acid that may be taken orally as a supplement. The study found that taurine may help prevent irregular heartbeat by regulating mineral levels in the blood and tissues. Researchers believe taurine may be effective in AF partly because it decreases nervous system activity.

Use of natural blood thinners, alternatives to warfarin (Coumadin) and other prescription blood thinners
Two days ago I was diagnosed with A-Fib. My Doctor, prescribed Cardizem 120mg. He also mentioned Coumadin, for the prevention of blood clots. My Doctor explained both medications and risks to me, it was my decision not to take the Coumadin. I started to take the Cardizen two days ago. I would like to know what could you suggest for prevention of blood clots. If you do have any herbal suggestions, can they be taken with the Cardizem?
There are certain supplements that could be of benefit in this condition and certain herbs that can help thin the blood and Dr Ray Sahelian has a list and review at this page blood clot. However, little human research is available regarding the efficacy of these natural approaches and how they compare to the prescription blood thinners. I am not aware of any studies that have looked at the interaction of Cardizem with natural supplements, therefore it is not easy to make any recommendations. if any supplements are taken, the dosage should be low at the beginning and one should proceed cautiously with medical supervision.

Baking soda
I was diagnosed with A Fib and given a script for Carvedilol. I do not feel safe using it. I have been taking baking soda daily. I am 71 years young, exercise moderately 7 days a week.
   I am not familiar with the use of baking soda for this condition.

Effects of magnesium on atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery: a meta-analysis.

To assess the efficacy of the administration of magnesium as a method for the prevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation and to evaluate its influence on hospital length of stay (LOS) and mortality. 20 randomised trials were identified, enrolling a total of 2490 patients. Magnesium administration decreased the proportion of patients developing postoperative AF from 28% in the control group to 18% in the treatment group. Data on LOS were available from seven trials. Magnesium did not significantly affect LOS. The overall mortality was low (0.7%) and was not affected. Magnesium administration is an effective prophylactic measure for the prevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation. It does not significantly alter LOS or in-hospital mortality.

Atrial fibrillation — the rapid and uncoordinated beating of the upper chambers of the heart — is a fairly common disorder that has been linked to an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and early death. Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in Israel, and unlike most of the other illegal drugs, it is common among segments of the population with higher demographic characteristics. A healthy 20 year old male patient, with two previous admissions with atrial fibrillation, was admitted to the emergency room with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The patient presented evidence of cannabis abuse, and no other pathologic cause for atrial fibrillation. Sinus rhythm was restored and the patient was discharged. Cannabis abuse is responsible for a wide range of pathologies, including cognitive impairment, a rise in the prevalence of lung, head and neck tumors, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, and an increase in the risk of ischemic cardiovascular events. Cannabis abuse can induce atrial fibrillation in predisposed patients. Good practice may consider the inclusion of cannabis abuse tests in young patients admitted due to atrial fibrillation, and definite medical advice to stop the drug abuse.

n-3 Fatty acids consumed from fish and risk of atrial fibrillation or flutter: the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Study.

Experimental studies have shown that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish may have antiarrhythmic properties. We examined the association between consumption of n-3 fatty acids from fish and risk of atrial fibrillation or flutter. In a prospective cohort study of 47 949 participants (mean age: 56 y) in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Study, we investigated the relation between the consumption of n-3 fatty acids from fish estimated from a detailed semiquantitative food questionnaire and risk of atrial fibrillation or flutter. The subjects were followed up in the Danish National Registry of Patients for the occurrence of atrial fibrillation or flutter and in the Danish Civil Registration System (vital status and emigration). The consumption of n-3 fatty acids from fish was analyzed as sex-specific quintiles with the use of Cox proportional hazards models. During follow-up (x: 5.7 y), atrial fibrillation or flutter had developed in 556 subjects (374 men and 182 women). Consumption of n-3 fatty acids from fish was not associated with a reduction in risk of atrial fibrillation or flutter. We cannot exclude the possibility of residual confounding caused by a lack of information on intake of fish-oil tablets.

Q. Is there a cure for atrial fibrillation?
A. Depending on the cause, an atrial fibrillation cure is possible. For instance, if this heart condition was due to a hyperactive thyroid, or excess thyroid medication, treating the thyroid problem can lead to a cure. But there are other causes of AF that may not have a full cure.

Replenishing body water with oral or intravenous fluids corrects dehydration-related low blood pressure in most cases. Severe dehydration, such as occurs with heat stroke or burns, can cause a potentially life-threatening condition known as hypovolemic shock. Markedly reduced blood flow can lead to permanent organ damage with hypovolemic shock.

German scientist professor Güautnter Siegel, M.D., of the University of Medicine in Berlin, discovered that garlic may remove preliminary forms of plaque, called nanoplaque, that deposit on artery walls causing artherosclerosis. Garlic is available as a supplement in capsule form from health food stores. Capsules are recommended over tablets because tablets are heated during their formation, reducing the potency of the garlic. However, you may also want to use fresh garlic and make tea by crushing one clove and simmering it in 1 cup of water for about 15 minutes. Strain and cool when finished and add a small spoonful of honey to sweeten. Drink 2 cups daily for heart health. Garlic can thin your blood, so speak to your health practitioner if you take blood-thinning medicines.

While much more research is needed to understand how garlic reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, eating garlic raw, cooking it and adding it to foods or taking garlic supplements may be beneficial for those with hypertension or who are at risk of getting it. Garlic helps to lower cholesterol levels which is important, because high levels of cholesterol contribute to plaque buildup along the blood vessel walls and this makes the arteries hard and narrow. Too much buildup leads to a condition called atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease that raises blood pressure. Garlic’s cholesterol-lowering action, may help slow the progression of atherosclerosis and slightly lower blood pressure, reports the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.


Garlic also contains antioxidants that may destroy free radicals that contribute to many conditions including heart disease. Garlic also appears to inhibit the blood from clotting; allowing your blood to flow more easily through the blood vessels. Garlic is considered an alternative remedy so it is not fully regulated when it comes to its medicinal use. This means that the amount and quality of garlic in products vary greatly and since the effects of garlic are not fully understood, there is no known specific dose that lowers blood pressure in all patients. If you decide to try garlic the University of Maryland Medical Center, recommends daily 2 to 4 g of fresh, minced garlic clove; 600 to 1,200 mg daily if using aged garlic extract; two 200 mg tablets three times a day if using freeze-dried garlic; 4 mL daily of fluid garlic extract; 20 mL daily of garlic tincture or 0.03 to 0.12 mL three times daily if using garlic oil.


Garlic is considered generally safe when taken by mouth, but can cause side effects such as bad breath, a burning sensation in the mouth or stomach, heartburn, gas, nausea, vomiting, body odor and diarrhea. Since garlic inhibits blood clotting it should not be used by people with bleeding disorders or those taking blood-thinning medications. Do not take garlic if your are scheduled for surgery, notes MedlinePlus. It might irritate the stomach and may not be appropriate for those with digestive or gastrointestinal diseases. Garlic supplements interact negatively with other medications so it should only be used under medical supervision.

Besides grape skin, grape seeds and red wine, berries, peanuts and a Japanese plant called knotweed are sources of resveratrol. In fact, most resveratrol-based supplements available in North America are extracted from the Japanese knotweed. No side effects from consumption of resveratrol supplements have been reported in humans as of 2011, although the long-term safety has not been fully evaluated, says Drugs.com. More research is also needed in humans to fully confirm resveratrol’s benefits, since many studies have been conducted in animal subjects.

Castor Oil Transdermal Packs

At the beginning of the menstrual cycle, when the first symptoms of cramping become noticeable, a castor oil transdermal pack can dramatically reduce the severity of symptoms throughout the cycle. This is the basic procedure:

  1. A wash cloth should be soaked in pure, cold-pressed castor oil that is obtained from a health food store.
  2. The wash cloth should be placed on bare skin on the lower stomach.
  3. Put a piece of plastic on top of the cloth, such as a plastic grocery bag.
  4. Place a hot water bottle on top of that. The water should be made as hot as possible, so long as the patient can tolerate it.
  5. Leave this in place for at least 30 minutes.

The above procedure can also be done repeatedly during the cycle to provide relief. However one treatment is usually enough to provide massive relief. Women should use only dioxin-free, unchlorinated feminine products, especially tampons.
