Blood pressure (BP) is the force of the blood as it passes through blood vessels, especially arteries. In order to sustain life, blood must not only be kept circulating, but must also circulate at an appropriate pressure. For example, if blood pressure is too low, organs of the body, such as the brain, will not receive adequate oxygen and nutrients to function properly. High blood pressure, on the other hand, has adverse effects on organs such as the heart, kidneys, and brain. High blood pressure can contribute to the development of heart attacks and stroke. Among other factors, blood pressure depends on the rate and strength of the heartbeat. Stress causes the heartbeat to speed up, the heart to pump faster pushing more blood into the arteries, increasing blood pressure. High blood pressure can be caused by bad nutrition, such as too much meat (animal fat is high in cholesterol). It can also be caused by lack of exercise, nervous disorders, overeating, tobacco, alcohol, and a lack of calcium can also contribute to high blood pressure.
