Herbs high in vitamin B:

Herbs can be a rich source of essential vitamins and minerals, including the entire B-complex of vitamins. The Vitamin B complex contains more than six of these essential vitamins, including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine and cyanocobalamin, or more familiarly B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12, respectively. Alfalfa and catnip are high in all six of these vitamins. Several other herbs, among them burdock root, hops, nettle and yellow dock, are high in B1, B2, B3 and at least one other B vitamin.

Alfalfa

One of the only complete plant sources of the entire B complex of vitamins, alfalfa is also high in vitamins A, C, D, E and K. In “Prescription for Nutritional Healing” James F. Balch, M.D. describes alfalfa as a liver detoxifier, colon cleanser, antifungal agent and aid to pituitary gland function, as well as a rich source of chlorophyll and nutrients, including a comprehensive array of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Burdock Root

According to David Hoffman’s “New Holistic Herbal,” burdock root is commonly used to relieve various skin conditions that produce symptoms of dryness and scaling, such as psoriasis and eczema. Hoffman says it is also a “bitter” that can be used to help with appetite and digestion by stimulating secretion of bile and other digestive juices. Burdock root is high in B1, B2, B3 and B5, as well as vitamins A and C.

Catnip

According to Hoffman, catnip induces sweating and may be used to alleviate a variety of cold and flu symptoms, from fever to diarrhea. It also produces a relaxing, sedative effect on nerves. According to Balch, catnip contains B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, as well as the less-commonly reported B9.

Hops

Due to its relaxing effect on the central nervous system, hops is often used to relieve stress, anxiety, insomnia and potentially related symptoms like restlessness, headache and indigestion. It also has antiseptic and astringent properties. Balch lists hops as particularly high in vitamin B6, although it also contains B1, B2, B3 and B12, as well as vitamins A and C.

Nettle

Nettle has a wide variety of reported uses, from relieving eczema to nosebleeds, owing partly to its general tonic properties. Nettle is high in B1, B2, B3 and B5. Additionally, David Hoffman cites it as a particularly beneficial source of vitamin C, although it also contains vitamins A, D, E and K.

Yellow Dock

Yellow dock has reported benefits on the skin, digestion and gall bladder, among other systems of the body. Yellow dock is high in B1, B2, B3 and B5. It is also rich in vitamins A and C.
